Yards and lawns - If you would like a low maintenance grass in your yard, try centipede grass. This slow-growing grass requires less fertilizing and mowing than most grasses.
- If you have a yard you'd like to show off, you might try planting TifLawn Bermuda grass. This full-sun grass requires high maintenance but makes for an attractive lawn.
- Moss on your lawn indicates that your lawn is either too acidic or has too much shade. To reduce the lawn's acidity, apply lime; to reduce shading, prune or remove trees and bushes as needed.
- Before winter, prune tree branches that hang over your house. Pruning will minimize damage caused by branches falling during wind and ice storms.
- Lower your summer air conditioning costs by planting shade trees. Plant trees on the east side of the house as well as the west side, making sure that they will shade windows as they grow.
Control pests - With their painful bites, fire ants can be unwelcome visitors to your property. You can control them by regular use of fire ant baits.
Hurricane protection - Live in a hurricane area? Your home may need improvements to protect it against high winds if it has any of the following: a gabled roof, a double entry door, or doublewide garage doors.
- One easy way to protect your home against a hurricane is to install storm shutters over all the exterior windows. You can install manufactured shutters or shutters you build yourself from plywood.
Temperature control - Make sure that your air conditioning system is properly maintained and is not too large for your house. A leaky or overlarge system will waste your money, as well as not dehumidify the air properly, encouraging molds to grow.
- When you are painting the interior of your house, you'll want to use mildew resistant paints designed for high humidity.
