Kitchen Remodeling--Elementary Ideas: P, Q, R

By Alicia Malone

Many things can help you prepare for a home improvement project. If you get ready ahead of time for your kitchen makeover, it's easier to complete everything you have planned and have a stress-free experience from start to finish.

P is for Preparation

Preparation is to home improvement projects what hammers are to nails. It is the driving force behind a successful kitchen remodel. Before you begin tearing up the floors, putting up wallpaper, installing new faucets, or buying appliances, stop--think ahead and plan where you want to ultimately go with the project. Take measurements and make sure everything you want to do will fit in the space you have. Gather prices and quotes, write out a budget, and know where you want to go before you get there.

Q is for Quality

A kitchen remodel is a great opportunity to replace outdated kitchen elements with fresh, new elements and create a new look and feel for your space. Although your budget may dictate how much you spend, you get to decide where to spend it. While you can purchase some kitchen elements at bargain prices, some things are OK to splurge on. You may want to spend a little more money on frequently used appliances or areas that receive a lot of use and abuse. You want them to look and perform their best for years to come.

R is for Research

When planning to remodel your kitchen space, do your homework. Many great ideas are available to maximize a small space, to increase the light in a dimly lit room, to create an efficient kitchen cabinet system, to decorate, and much more. Rather than waiting until you're in the middle of the kitchen makeover to make decisions, research different ideas and learn about the costs, materials, and work involved in home improvement projects of this type.
