A custom kitchen doesn't have to involve radical changes or major
renovations. You can take your kitchen from plain to personalized
by using easy home improvement techniques that can change the way
you, and others, look at your kitchen.
J is for Junk
Before you begin any kitchen makeover, look around the room and evaluate all
of things that are currently taking up space. Often papers and
mail and other clutter tend to build up in the kitchen because
of the multiple functions the space serves. Invest in some storage
containers or have a contractor build some extra cabinets or shelves
to hold all of the things that are detracting from your kitchen's
full potential.
K is for Knowledge
When you begin any home improvement project, such as a kitchen makeover, big
or small, it's important to understand not only what you want to
do, but also how to do it and how the new changes can affect the
kitchen space. Read up on the types of projects you want to do, ask
a professional contractor or designer for ideas, prices, a list of
materials that would be required, and how long the project may take.
Being knowledgeable about what it takes to successfully implement
your kitchen makeover ideas is your first step toward success.
L is for Light Fixtures
Although sometimes thought of after the fact, replacing the light fixtures in
your kitchen is a simple, yet effective, way to change the look and
feel of the room. Not only do new light fixtures brighten up your
kitchen, but they also usher in a new sense of style and atmosphere.
Avoid using one, large overhead fixture for your kitchen because
it can create a glaring, overly bright effect. Instead, consider
recessed lighting, ambient or accent lighting, and fixtures that
serve a decorative-and-functional purpose. A contractor can help
you with any rewiring necessary to install your new fixtures properly
and safely.
