Choosing a Contractor

Look for reputable contractors based on recommendations or references. You want a contractor to do a good job AND come back to fix any problems. Ask for your contractor's reasons for using a preferred brand--cheapest is not always best.

Warranties

Get a service labor warranty in addition to the product warranty. Find out what level of customer service you can expect, and for how long. Check what is covered by the warranty--is it all parts of just certain items?

Window Frame Materials

Aluminum is no longer popular. Vinyl is the most popular material but fiberglass is gaining in popularity because it is more energy efficient and stronger than vinyl, and it can be painted. Wood can provide a traditional look and is extremely energy efficient.

Energy Efficiency Ratings

Windows typically make up about 10% of your house but are responsible for about 40-50% of the heat lost or gained. Low emissivity (Low E) glass has an invisible coating that reduces heat transfer. The U-value and R-value measure the heat conductivity and resistance of heat flow of a material. A U-value of 0.25 or R-4 is a good energy efficiency rating. Argon or krypton is commonly used to improve the insulating properties between the panes of double paned windows. Ask whether your replacement windows have gas between the panes.

After Installation

Check the windows carefully. Pay close attention to the insulation and air-sealing around the new window frames. Good preparation is key to the success of any project. Do your research, follow these tips, and your replacement windows project should bring you great satisfaction and save you money.
