When your windows look good, your home looks good. But looks aren't everything when choosing replacement windows. Good quality, well fitted replacement windows can also contribute significantly to the energy efficiency of you home.
How to choose energy efficient windows
Having modern double or triple-glazed windows saves money on heating and cooling costs. There are four main points to consider when choosing energy efficient windows:
- Replacement windows need to fit tightly to reduce air leaks around the frame. Look for the lowest possible rating of air loss per cubic square foot.
- Radiation--the movement of heat through the glass--can be corrected with a coating that reflects heat.
- Convection is reduced by installing gas-filled double or triple glazing with heat resistant frames, which prevents the warm air on one side being drawn toward the cooler air on the other side.
- Conduction--where the warm air on one side of the glass heats up the air on the other side--can also be reduced by installing double or triple glazed windows with a non-conductive gas between the panes.
To find out how energy efficient your replacement windows are, check The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) or Energy Star rating.
Vinyl replacement windows: attractive and energy efficient
Vinyl replacement windows are energy efficient because the material they are made from, PVC (polyvinyl chloride), is a poor conductor of heat and cold. Vinyl replacement windows are also virtually maintenance-free and do away with the need for painting and treatment. Just clean them with soap and water. You can purchase vinyl replacement windows in a wide range of syles and colors, so they look good as well as save you money.
