Do you Need New Doors?

Check for wear and tear

Ask yourself the following questions while carefully inspecting your doors:
  • Is your exterior wood door showing signs of wear and tear?
  • Does your interior French door not fit in its frame quite like it used to?
  • Does your sliding glass door constantly jump the tracks?
  • Does your glass shower door leak water frequently?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it is very possible that you need new doors. Doors are such a critical part of the home that it's important that you make sure yours are working properly. All of your home entry doors, especially your front door and patio door, should be inspected periodically for maintenance needs.

A closer look

The first place to begin looking for problems is on the door face itself. Cracks or splintering may start out small, but it's only a matter of time before small problems become larger ones. The door hinge is the next place to check. Warped joints can cause the door to mismatch with its frame and close improperly. The doorknob should be easily turned and should click when the door is closed. Check the door lock for wear and tear. Finally, examine how the door fits into its frame. A problem here could mean foundation problems, which are much more serious and expensive to repair. A sliding door system should be smooth and precise. A retractable screen door should also be fluid and form a good seal in the frame.
